These dogs originated in Germany around 400 years ago. They were meant to hunt a wild boar. Naturally enough the great size of the breed allows some to use the animal as a guard dog. Contrary to some people's conceptions, the breed is not aggressive.

The final step towards establishing a separate breed was done in 1880 with setting the first breed standard. The breed started to be regarded the national symbol of Germany.
